That's exactly what I did with the magnets, though. See the little metal rods on the end in >>7301166
The rods are there to provide stability, but the magnets are needed to prevent the head from sliding off the rod.

Ah, I see what you mean now. I've got 1/4" wood to put on the top and bottom to make the edges, like so. Gonna glue that to the triangles probably later today or tomorrow.
