>How did a hobby for nerdy girls turn into something so trashy?

Weeb culture. Weeb culture is arguably just as "degenerate" as listening to Lady Gaga/Katy Perry, if not worse. At least Lady Gaga fans are kind of aware of the theatricality of it all. But there's something about weeb culture that inculcates people to not understand concepts like propriety, or sexual boundaries.

Hence why you have so many neckbeards being gropey and honestly not understand why what they are doing is wrong, or why you have so many girls in the hobby who will loudly talk about their latest dildo (while in cosplay), or about what "kinks" they enjoy in public places like restaurants.

Japanese anime and manga are sexualized in this sort of slapstick, childish way, which is especially bad when it comes to man/womenchildren as they internalize this slapstick sexuality as something harmless.

Then there's numerous other factors at play:

- The irony culture. Being able to couch things like broadcasting your interest in hardcore incest NTR porn publicly in a socially acceptable way because it is "ironic". See also: Ahegao selfies, "sempai noticed me xD", "lewdddddd" etc.
- The generally slutty way Japanese anime/manga characters dress (see: Sailor Moon as an example of characters that under any other circumstances would be pornography-tier).
- The sort of people the hobby attracts - listless people who lack a group identity - looking to attach themselves to some sort of subculture to give their lives meaning.
- People who were unpopular in high school who see the convention/cosplay culture as a place to live out a surrogate high-school life, where they're actually popular and desirable.
- Generally: the increasing normalization of violent pornography, and the expectation that women should be into it too (only frumpy weird chicks aren't these days, apparently).

Pic related incidentally, the fans of this franchise encapsulate everything I described.

Did I miss anything?
