Welcome to the party! Love to know your region! I know that some groups have whats called a "golden key" which is basically loaner gear for newbies. I never asked my group about it as I have a fairly passable Florentine gown that I'm reworking to be more accurate.

It's a good point about it being specific to England. I tend to get kinda narrowly focused since in my experience a lot of the easily accessible information on the web is geared more towards the English styles.

Hey I'm not disappointed that cotton is period, makes things easier.

I can't seem to find that in the book (earlier edition?), but it should be obvious that pastels are period. Both due to paintings showing that they exist and the quite obvious observation that if you leave fabric in a dye tub for a shorter amount of time you get pastels!
