I actually am American, west coaster. It all depends on the LARP you go to, and how much you care. If you go to a vampire larp full of teenagers you're going to have a bad time, but if you play with adults, while it's not going to be as ridiculously professional as say the German larps, you're still going to have a good time.
Larp is as fun as you make it, and in my experience with a lot of it, it looks pretty silly from the outside but it's really, really fun from the inside. If you put the time in and invest in a great costume, you'll have fun.
