You'll be fine I've never been bashed for wearing one, and no one should. Go to Japan and they're given at onsen for you to wear around town, it's a summer wear that some people wear in Japan.
Honestly outside of yukata even the Japanese don't know how to wear formal wear and there are lots of people who love seeing anyone dressed up in it. As long as you do it correctly and adhere by the few small rules the clothing have, you'll be fine.
