I can understand why SnK has exploded in popularity purely from aesthetic standpoints. It's a very easy series for people not steeped in Japanese culture to watch without having to deal with foreign language puns, high school drama, or fantastic bullshit animu tropes. It's an action based series, which can bring in a broader audience than something like a romance or a suspense series. Most importantly, the world is big enough that one can inject themselves into it without problems. It's not a show with an intimate focus on a small cast, it's a series with a broad cast with a variety of positions that are often unexplored. It's why stuff like Pokemon/Hamsteak/etc get popular. You can imagine yourself in the action, living your own story without necessarily disrupting the greater whole.

Shingeki does have interesting ideas behind it. Isayama doesn't have quite the writing chops necessary to pull it off, but I can see the logic behind the pull for so many people.
