Holy shit, what? That's some high rate jewery right there. I'm really fucking sad that happened. I think I would have fought tooth and nail to get to whomever is in charge at customs to oversee my issue and review it. Open the packaging, show them it's a dress and not a fucking lost painting of Picasso, and show them bank statements giving the true dress value.

At the very least, if they couldn't be reasoned with I'd tell them to return to sender and demand a refund from the shipping service, and just reverse charge on my credit card if they don't honor their mistake.

Obviously too late now but I could never see myself spending $500 just in custom fees because of a blunder on the shipper's part. I'm so mad for your friend right now.
