Verily. I still regularly encounter people who think Chinese and Japanese are the same language, and do not know what basic words like "androgynous", "copacetic", and "innocuous" mean. Some examples:

>me: I don't like very girly things, I prefer to be androgynous.
>mom: androlygus? what's that mean? It sounds wrong.

>customer making a fuss at work over an expired coupon, call the manager and 45 minutes later manage to calm them down
>ask "So now everything's copacetic, right ma'am?"
>"whuts thayt meen? ahr yew maykin fuhnna me!?"
>45 more minutes trying to calm upset customer down, manager had to take an extra $5 off her total to shut her up.

>get my car checked out by mechanic for odd shaking when stopped in D
>mechanic says it's most likely an engine mount but that it doesn't need to be fixed any time soon but I could still fix it anyway for $400
>me: "Well if it's innocuous then I don't see why i should spend $400 RIGHT NOW to get it fixed. It is, isn't it?"
>"...Do whut now?"

It makes me sad.
