I have a weird, wide face, feminine lower half of my face, ssj3 goku tier browridge, oddly narrow shoulders but a large ribcage, gyno, weird hands, etc. I just have very strange proportions in my eyes and I don't think I can cosplay much well. Even specifically ugly characters are usually ugly in a way that doesn't fit me. Like I literally lived the wow neckbeard lifestyle for a long time, but I'd never make a convincing cosplay the guy from southpark.
I say just do what you like, you're never going to be exactly like the character. I just wouldn't cosplay something that's 100% unlike you if you're aiming to be accurate to the original media. And not aiming for 100% accuracy is fine, sometimes it's cool to have your own take on the character.
I guess it boils down to your reasons for cosplaying. Some people really care about "bringing the character to life", others are in it for other reasons.
