I assure you it's very smooth. It has some nicks in it because I used it as an actual mallet for a few years before painting it but sandpaper won't get that out. Besides, it only takes an afternoon to make another and I have plenty of wood left. If I could find my whittling knife I would have already made a cleaner one and painted that one instead.
