I once had a girl come up to me who first complimented me on my outfit, then told me that it wasn't really lolita because my dress didn't have any lace on the hem and heels aren't loli ("just so you know!"). She was wearing a miniskirt covered in cheap scratchy lace, combat boots, striped stockings and a t-shirt with some kind of Hot Topic-y mascot on it. I just thanked her and walked away.

Tbh with big meetups and the online comm it's easy to lose sight of the fashion aspect of the fashion. When it's something you wear regularly it's not very convenient to have a wardrobe with a majority of big bold statement pieces and few versatile ones. Someone on here once made fun of me for having more than five blouses when I only had about seven main pieces but to me it's like, if my only white blouse is in the wash what else am I supposed to wear?
Sometimes I'm trawling Closet Child and I come across a beautiful print OP that I know is very popular with Western lolitas and I'm tempted to buy it, but then I realize I only have one or two opportunities per year to wear something like that. And like anon said, if you wear the same main piece to every event people will start to complain. So to me, big standout pieces aren't worth it in the long run because I'd rather spend my money on a cute versatile everyday wardrobe than on popular pieces that other people probably like more than I do.

That's just how I do it, anyway. Some people only get to wear lolita a few times a year and prefer to go all out. That's cool too.
