Hey Anon!

I actually run my local convention's AA, and we're a juried hall with a modest amount of applications. ( ~10k attendance convention. Not tiny, but not huge) So I can give you some little pointers.

>Keep a "High School Art Teacher" mindset.
This may sound kind of silly but you need to separate yourself from your own favoritism/tastes as much as possible. This is difficult because a lot of AA heads are Artists as well, but you have to try in order to keep your ally fair and diverse.

For the grading rubric we use 4 categories, each with 10 possible points for a total of 40. If possible, have 2 judges evaluate each app separately, so a grand total of 80.
>Fundamentals: Does the artist have at least a basic handle on anatomy, color, design, etc.
>Appeal: Does this art match the feeling of our con? This doesn't mean fandoms and stuff, but how does it fit your convention's demographic. This category is completely dependant on your con and the traffic you get. We are a more pure "anime" con. We promote way more 'traditional' convention stuff instead of embracing the outliers - Undertale, Steven Universe, Dream Daddy...you get the idea. This doesn't mean that if you have this stuff we won't have you in our show, but if it's all you have? Probably not. We also tend to have a 'younger' crowd - i.e. more teens than 20's, this changes what sells well and how much people spend. I always like talking to my artist's after a show to hear the feedback on what is selling. So make sure your artist alley maximizes the money the artists will get by creating an appealing alley for your congoers.
