If you do go with model magic I have some tips.
Height with model magic is really tricky. I'd suggest what anon said and use tin foil and a structure then mold model magic around it but you might have to take drying them really carefully.

I feel bad constantly repeating my methods but, I found with model magic, if you control air control [by putting it in a plastic bin with the lid cracked] then the slow drying process makes it so there aren't any huge cracks. If cracking does happen, use super glue to fill in the gaps, hold it for about 30 seconds, then let continue to dry.

I've recently been doing that style for some of the gradient commissions I get and yeah I have to agree with you. I really like that style a lot more than the others.
