I think certain media/series lend themselves better to one style or another. Wind Waker cosplays come to mind specifically: the colour palette and art style of the whole game makes it so any 'realistic' cosplays I see from it seem so out of place. This isnt exactly the best example but overall I just think you need the very bright primary colours and kinda goofy look to it to keep the same feeling/aesthetic as the source material
