If I had started with half hour runs first thing when I was trying to lose weight I would have stopped after a week. I know because I made that mistake a million times before I figured out that running was just not for me. I have tried all sorts of /fit/ approved beginners advice, and what I came to realize is that /cgl/ and /fit/ set the bar WAY too fucking high for someone who is fat and wanting to lose weight. This has to be a lifestyle change, everyone knows that, especially fatties. So when you are given a workout routine that makes you miserable and are told that the only way to lose weight is to stick with that no matter how shitty it makes you feel, well guess what happens? You don't stick with it, because it sucks, so you remain fat and continue to hate yourself because you can't even do what you were told was the most basic starting exercise.

The most important thing when losing weight is to have good self confidence in the first place (which you won't get on cgl because here anyone over 110lbs is a fatty and anyone under needs to eat a sandwich) and you need to start out EASY. You need to work at changing things at a pace you are comfortable with, gradual changes that are permanent are much better than any sudden change you can't stick with. Yo-yo dieting is much worse for your body (specifically your heart) than simply remaining fat, and any exercise no matter how little is much better for your body than none at all no matter how much you weigh.

I started with SOME walking, SOME lifting weights, and eating less food. Nothing special, nothing complicated and most importantly nothing too hard. Two months later and I was 20 lbs down. Before that I had never once lost more than a few lbs here or there which I would always gain back because I hated what I was doing so I would stop.

You have to give yourself tasks and goals that are actually realistic for you. 4 half hour runs for me, even after I have lost more weight, would be impossible.
