is there any way to do a Kaiki cosplay without it just looking like a random closet cosplay?

Starting to work on Ideas for this years dragoncon and one costume I wanted to do was Kaiki. Is he to generic looking to be recognizable? Its a pretty simple outfit and wig, Im worried its going to be one of the cosplays like L where its super simple so if its not amazing it will look like shit.
My second costume Idea was going to be a Kyubey or Genderbent Mami from madoka magica. Is something like that frowned upon? It would be my first cosplay like that and im a bit nervous about doing a genderbent cosplay in the firstplace, but Im not going to halfass it if I end up going with it.
Any advice on either of these 2 ideas? Last 3 dragoncons ive just used the same costume I made a few years ago so this is the first time in a long time I've started thinking about other cosplays.
