You bringing up Tumblr era of identities and now just reminded me of the phase many teens and young adults there went through about otherkins and fictionkin. It was the same shit that people wanted to be taken seriously, and all the genderspecial and made up pronouns started around there too. I had thought people would grow out of believing harry potter lived in their head or they were dogs in a human body, but looking at the kids today and how it's the same voices but actually getting people's attention and causing change on society and laws...it's so weird.

100% it can. Like a form of mass hysteria or taking advantage of mentally ill or self conscious into a cult.
