If he's not the kind of kid who would get freaked out by the dog jumping around, I think you'd be fine, but I don't think boxers are good for first time dog owners either.

Maybe try taking him to a local shelter, explaining your situation, and seeing if they'll let him just play with some of the dogs? See how he fares.

Also I think that's more a matter of the cat being good with kids, not the kid being good with cats. I wouldn't take any animals in wihtout introducing them first, see how they interact, etc. General rule, even for those adopting an animal just for themselves, You want to know the animal a little before you bring it home.
