I use actual military stuff, largely because the Army gave it to me for the low, low price of a year of my life, a lot of metal in my leg, and a limp.

But I'm playing a character who both came from a well-equipped corporate background in an area that wasn't under a fallout plume in our game documentation (east of Houston TX) and so had access to such gear, and who explicitly raided a storage locker at the edge of the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Crater during my first game, so having that stuff isn't a stretch. If I hadn't done so, I'd be wearing a great deal more repurposed ice hockey gear.
