I only get fabrics that have subtle prints and make sure that there is enough contrast between the colors of the merch and the fabric so that the merch doesn't get drowned out by the fabric. (Avoid black fabric with navy merch).

Since you already own the fabric, I would suggest laying your merch on top of it, take and picture and then see if your merch pops.

Threw together some pictures from intsagram for inpso. Some of the bags having the fabric adds to merch while others drown it out, imo.
