Don't do this if your eyes are deep set. Darker hues give the impression of "sinking in".

also use fluffy brushes for blending near the crease. Little sponge applicators pack on more color but you'd need to replace frequently b/c they harbor bacteria.
>pic related, I thin kit's easier to layers dark over light over the other way around which doesn't really make sense unless you don't want the lighter color to show up as much/are layering for a special effect/etc
