Trinity Blood used to kind of be an "auto win" at cosplay contests. I saw one at A-kon, but it was kinda meh.

Hey OP, also consider looking around at fanart and stuff. A lot of series will have fan "fancy" versions of the characters. I know there's some for Tiger & Bunny and FMA. And of course, if you're into it, Hetalia. Though those are all really male oriented, not big dresses, sorry.

Not a huge poofy ballgown, but Tsukimi's dress from Princess Jellyfish would be a nice challenge.
