Herpes sucks when you first get it but it goes away after a few days and it doesn't cause any health problems. It's basically equivalent to chicken pox and people only worry about it because it's highly stigmatized against. Most health centers and STD screening tests don't even test for presence of Herpes virus because of this reason.

For HIV all you have to do is take Emtricitabine-Tenofovir before and after having sex and it's more effective than condoms at preventing HIV transmission. And the best part is that it's legally required by Obamacare to be given out for free if you get a prescription for it. Unless you're having gay raw buttsex up your butt or sharing drug needles, your chances of getting HIV is basically 0 if you're smart about it.
