I can't really tell what's going on with the Lions and other figures but for the obvious and larger beads this is the technique I'd use. You need two needles and thread. One is attached to the fabric where you want the beads to start. String on this as many beads as needed to fill the "line" your adding. The second thread and needles is used to sew over the first thread in between each bead (called couching). You can also do this with Single needle and thread when you get better at estimating how many beads you need to fill a section.
