Most sources on this are pretty old and some are unfortunately gone from the internet, maybe another anon can contribute more, but if you look in this video for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_O_W7BYD-E The hosts are playing up the whole "lolitas are freaky dangerous weirdos, is it really okay to approach them?" thing in the beginning, which obviously might likely be just acting and may not be what they truly think, but it does play into a certain stereotype that was commonly attached to lolitas, at least back then (this vid is from around the late 00s afaik).
There's also a bit from an interview with Mana in relation to lolitas and Vkei which also features sweet lolitas, gif related, and several essays and thesis on the fashion explore the Japanese public's reactions to it, which is negative in many cases. It's not Japanese in origin but you might find the thesis "Lolita - Dreaming, Despairing, Defying" an interesting read, a google search should bring it up.

Nayrt, I think that by "gone" anon means the attitude that the subculture used to have, not that the clothes themselves are completely gone. And I kinda get it, although I don't wear the fashion like they did in the early days of FRUITS, like >>10019885 does. I miss the days when lolitas were on par with goths and other alternative "weirdos" rather than Disney princesses or worse, sissies and "littles".

It's a fashion-based subculture generally aimed at women who prioritize wearing cute things that make them happy over appealing to men and societal expectations. That's how it's began, in any case. If you want to know more, please lurk more.

Sweet gained a lot of popularity in the last two decades, you can find more emphasis on gothic lolita in older videos. This one is an excerpt from an interview with Mana https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntaBQy1Crp8 that also features talk about gothic lolita and shots of lolitas (sweet ones too) at Moi Dix Mois' concerts. Whatever strange impression normies get of lolita fashion, I'd honestly rather it be like this.
