now chainmail as I said would be way cheaper and doesn't have the fitting problem. Or to be more specific most chainmails doesn't fit the the wearers by default but you can help it with a few belts, which you would had to wear regardless to help the weight distribution.
Also you buy a simple butted chainmail not a riveted one then you can modify with a little work to be more form fitting (and you can repair it too which is needed in simple butted chainmails as they tend to loose links over time)
