I'm assuming you're a guy. When you put make-up of any kind on, it sort of flattens your face (or other body features), which is why when we put on foundation, we also put on blush, bronzer, highlighers, etc. This will be true of full body paint too.

In pic related, the guy on the left has painted himself green. The guy is clearly muscular, but you can't make out some of the definition on his abs or chest, and it doesn't look nearly as dramatic as the contoured, muscle defined body paint on the right. So in order to look good, yes. you need it.
