This pic is what I meant about context. If you were around you remember the outrage and how many "just because it's in the bible doesn't mean it's lolita" arguments. Unsurprisingly Mana and Japanese lolitas didn't get it anywhere near as much.

Here's a larger pic, it's pretty oldschool ero, like the kind of style more often seen/worn at goth/fetish clubs like Tokyo Dark Castle back in the day, and I would agree it has a lot more in common with regular goth than any other sub-style (I do however think it's distinct in its own way).
