/fa/ here. I get lolita, I think but I don't get cosplay. why cosplay

I don't get it. I mean, yea, dressing up is fun. only reason I haven't done it myself is because cons are expensive. but people treat it like a genuine passion or subculture. I don't get it.

I'm not missing anything, right? it's just dressing up as fictional characters. it's as arbitrary and shallow as that, right? so how can people take it so seriously?
