Great Sword -
Depending on how long it would be (Lets use this pic for reference), you could split it into 3 parts - The Blade, Pommel, and Handle.

If you want realistic weight, stick with wood for the blade. If not, foam for the blade, and wood for the pommel and handle. That way the center of balance is around the pommel. A hard, heavy wood would be something like Maple. Soft and light would be something like Poplar.

For foam, this stuff is what I use

No matter what project, you'll need a few things- Wood Glue, Sandpaper, some sort of file or rasp, screws or nails, and maybe some clamps. A tad expensive to start up, but worth it in the end. The real killer is the paint
