The trouble is that you're trying to find ONE look that unifies all of lolita. Unfortunately for you, lolita started in, what, 80s? 70s? So that's 40? 50 years worth of evolution? Even if you look at mainstream fashion, 70s fashion is not today's fashion. Heck, even 80s fashion is not 70s fashion.

Half a century, anon. The style has been through trends. It's been through fads. It split up into many different substyles. Many things came in and then died out. AP went through a hime lolita phase where they released halterneck cutsews with arm warmers, with bare shoulders. Then we have salopettes that are being explained as lolita's fling with fairy kei. Now aatp is apparently trying out this steampunk business and brands are releasing muumuu-style dresses.

At the same time, fity years isn't all that long ago. I only got into lolita in 2006, that's not even a decade, and I still have a soft spot for hime lolita. There are girls who are into what lolita looked like pre-2006, aka old school lolitas. Every now and again a brand will bring back an old look for nostalgia's sake, baby in particular re-releases their old school stuff quite often (and it still sells steadily, from what I've seen). So while brands all seem to put more updated looks every GLB, which is why you think there is only one look, the older trends still stick around and there are still buyers for them. That's why you'll get such a huge variety of different styles.

What I'm saying is that lolita is much, much bigger than the small tiny box you're trying to fit it into.

Pic is vintage lolita, by the way. Victorian Maiden's Mermaid OP from 2001.
