If the coat was more form fitting than the weight of the fabric wouldn't be an issue. It's some ancient 20oz wool that the local fabric store had left over from the 80's; after the inuit parka craze ended no one wanted to spend $90 a metre for quality Canadian made fabric.
I could modify the pattern, but I don't really like the yolk seams. Once you start to modify a pattern heavily in both size and basic construction I'd rather just spend a couple dollars and start off with something closer to what I'd like.

I'm hijacking this thread as I have a sewing question and told not to start threads on this board.

I've been sewing for a few years and I'm fairly proficient at sewing, but my preferred machine is an ancient treadle without reverse. The best advice I've seen is just hold the work and do a few stitches close together when you start, and do the same thing at the end; will this hold up as well as back stitching?
