butted mail for first and for cosplay you don't really need riveted. Although if you make it out of too thin wire the links can come apart. There are a lot of chainmail sewing patterns but the most popular is the 1 in 4 as in pic. What you need to consider is the diameter of the wire you will use and the inner diameter of the links. Depending on those two things and the pattern your chain will look more sparse or dense (and a few other minor things like how stretched it is)

about lamellar, I wouldn't recommend fake leather because you either need to glue it on something to get thickness or it will just look way too flappy and thus really fake. So get some real leather (or maybe some kind of plastic that looks similar) then again the pattern can be a deciding factor too and of course everything depends on what kind of look do you want
