It happened in 2011 (Look up 'Animal hat trend' and that's all you'll find) and was probably the amalgamation of a few trends at the time. I was in my senior year when everyone at my school suddenly were wearing these tacky things only to die down in 2 months. It did stick around with the weebs a bit longer though.
