When I made mine, I used fusible web (like Heat n' Bond, Pellon Wonder-Under). I ironed it to the gold fabric, traced on the design, cut it out by hand, removed the fabric backing and ironed it onto the base suit. The corners did peel a little and the edges frayed after wear and tear but honestly if I knew how to do a professional-look satin stitch at the time it would've prevented all that.
