It does bring up an interesting, cheap, and unique suggestion though, that includes vests if wanted... 16th Irish, with a Liene (lay-nah), which is literally a giant yellow or white tunic with angle sleeves.

Stripes. Too short? Vertical. Too skinny? Horizontal.

Speaking of helmets, in researching parts of my kit, I'm wondering what kind of helmet guy on the right in this pic has, I think it's a Lobster tailed pot/zischagge, but it looks a tad Burgonet-ish. Wikipedia mentions LTPs from the isles having crests in the middle, being made from two parts forge welded together, but it also doesn't seem to mention anything about any LTP's from the 1500's.

Hey, you gotta learn how to handle a spear before you can sheath the sword.

Damn. If you were only closer to VA...

>what's a better way of getting a darker, gore splattered look?

It depends. Fresh or old? Blood turns brown when it dries, and using real blood from the butchers will eventually wash out. Get some red food coloring, and light brown ink to make permanent old blood stains.

Fresh looking is harder. You can buy a commercial stage gore that is like a perminant wet blood stain, but its out of season unless you order online.

>Currently thinking Irish, due to heritage

15th-16thC Irish. Its one of the most singularly unique and interesting time frames, as they're just coming out of isolation, and into Europe as mercs for the first time since the Romans. They are still using tech that is hundreds of years behind, and fashions that are frankly outrageous to continental Europe, making them rather exotic. Its criminally under represented, and easy as hell to do correctly. All you need is a lein (a giant saffron yellow tunic with angle wing sleeves) And pretty much any mix and match of armour from 1200AD to 1600AD. Greatsword optional.

Are we talking "leather fashion goods that look somewhat like armour for costuming pruposes" or "actually protective. Both have uses, but are completely different.

Going to be blunt about this. "Womens armour" rarely tends to be worth it over standard.
