I think you should go for the cosplay and not go as a sexy hunting ground. 90% of the 'easy ones' are crazy and if you dont leave with a disease you will leave with some clingy future suicide note.
Women have extra senses: the smart ones know when you are interested in more then the hobby. They will know you singled them out, and will know you are trying to come onto them. Want my advice? I am a 9/10 lean bodied /fit/ and /tg/ hybrid, and I ONLY cosplay with masks or helmets. The only ones you want to hang around with (and in your case, future date perhaps) is be interested in the hobby and be fun to talk to. No bravado, be nice, listen well, and ask about their interests, NOT talk about yours unless asked, and dont creep, know when to disengage and when its not working. Its easy to tell after doing that, just what their personality is like. Again, please refer to the picture. Crazy runs rampant at cons, but there are good times too.

Just in my personal experience from years of con-going and multiple attempts at relationships with con girls, yeah your pretty much right.
Generally, not ALL con women, but generally one half of them are pure attention whores. Who love to get involved in all kinds of drama. I am sure others have seen those kinds of females at cons all over the place.
The other half I have met are fairly shy/introverted, but still have that "I want to look pretty in front of nerds" mentality. So deep down they are incredibly insecure and lack confidence. And when you have a woman that lacks confidence, thats when they start with the abusive or asshole boyfriends, or even sometimes just become that chick who becomes self-aware of what she is.
Kind of like Skynet. They become self-aware of how intriguing they are to men so they flirt and flirt and flirt, which of course ends up causing all sorts of problems.

I have a billion stories to tell about con girls if you would like to hear, but there's my two cents.
