This has bothered me for years too.
All it takes is like 30 secs of thought.

School uniform? Durable cotton poplin
Formal princess? Taffeta, duchess satin, damask
Post apocalyptic? Rough hewn cottons and canvas

Just think about the setting and the world the characters inhabit. It's not hard.

Example. Leather Shingeki jackets....
A world where there is a shortage of land to grow food. They do not have loads of cattle to provide leather for an entire army.
