I didn't get into cons until I was 25. I didn't get into cosplay until I was 27. Feels like I missed out on a lot of stupid fun. It also turns cons into a small minefield of interaction with people who might be 10 years younger than myself. Thankfully, I have a big group of friends to enjoy cons with, but I would like to make more connections outside of that.

It's to filter out men too insecure to actually talk with women in my experience. Yes, there's a large number of details from attraction to time before you ask them out, but it's mostly to weed out men who lack the confidence to take the first step. I find it helps to just pretend I'm an asshole who doesn't care. Guys always complain about girls dating assholes, so they must be doing something right. It also forces you to put girls you're attracted to on an even level where you talk to them like people instead of something you desire to please.

Ask them to go drinking with you. That works for me a lot. A lot of cons have board game rooms, and it's a great place to break the ice with people. It requires a little courage to cold call someone like that, but you have to ask yourself if you're more afraid of being alone or being rejected. A lot of people are just as lonely as you are, and they're also too afraid to ask.
