You're starting to sound like you two are a actually a pretty good match for each other.

You should keep your partner's interests in mind when giving gifts, not your own.
For example, if you make her a fancy steak dinner because you like steak, but she hates steak. She obviously won't appreciate the gesture, and you'll get upset she doesn't like it. You're making the gift about yourself and your own feelings, even though it's supposed to be for her.
