Make sure you have the bobbin thread in facing the right direction, too. In my upright bobbin, the thread should be wound counterclockwise, and... I THINK the drop in bobbin on my newer machine is too, but I'd have to check it.

Putting it in the wrong way will really mess it up.

Re-thread the top of the machine with the needle RAISED all the way up. If you don't, then it won't catch the thread right in the coils and your tension will be off when you sew it. That hook (the one that goes up and down to pull thread through) that you thread the top thread through needs to be raised all the way up.

And like other anons have said, check tension in the top first, before messing with the bottom. Be sure your needle is in straight, not backwards, and is sharp. Be sure it goes straight down and doesn't click or nick any part of the machine.
