i blame prints. old school, even in its most basic pseudo-ita forms, tends to have more visual interest due to construction and design elements rather than brightly-colored prints. other fashions also use colorful prints, but few fashions outside of lolita have the distinctive trims and flourishes.

prints have mostly replaced the "pintucks and lace" of yore, though. the coord in question is an acceptable casual coord in the new style but not really taste.
