Yep, I meant armoured surcoat, I've experienced that the term "coat of plates" causes some confusion with some people who assume I mean "full plate" (yes, that actually happened). I was asking because of this illustration, in which number 5, the armoured surcoat, is placed under the chainmaille. I've seen a lot of examples in which it's worn over the maille like in my previous picture, so right now I guess I'll just do whatever I want with it.
