For larp its enough with a balaclava/lightly padded hat/cap.

But I wouldn't go near a hard foam larp or sca event without a properly padded cap (speaking out of experience, getting knocked out for real is not a fun experience).

Did you buy a kids sized coif or something, if its to small to accommodate enough padding?
