I’m not particularly upset about someone choosing to do what they want with an item they purchased and never intended on selling - I unbox figures for exactly the same reason, I want to display them and I don’t care if it depreciates value because that’s how I enjoy the product I purchased. So that’s nbd to me.

But, c’mon man. “Historical significance” is EXACTLY the reason anime fans feel second hand pain over a piece of rare old merchandise like this. That is exactly the same emotion, that this was a piece of history for their show, that combination of awe and nostalgia. Whether you value old stamps or old merchandise is only reflective of whether you value a country’s history or an anime’s history. Both are mass produced products designed to be sold for a profit, that only hold significance because of their scarcity and emotional attachment.
