Ballista update! Not a very big one, but to be honest none of them are going to be very big from here on out: most of the interesting work has already been completed.

Last week I spent a day doing minor fixes I'd been putting off. Most importantly I got a new axle which is wider than the previous one and can actually properly hold the wheels in place.

Today was just a whole lot of sanding and staining. The undercarriage has received its first of two coatings, and I've also stained the entire box of finnicky bits. That means I'm roughly halfway through sanding and a quarter of the way through staining. If all goes well, I'll at least be able to get a first layer of woodstain on everything tomorrow. I've used just over half of the tin so far though, so I might have to fit a trip to the local hardware store in my schedule too.

I've also commissioned a metal trigger mechanism at my local blacksmith. I walked up to him and told him what I had in mind, and he cheekily responded with "oh I know a better design for that". He's only going to be done with it a week before Drachenfest though, so I'm absolutely going to end up doing some ugly last-minute rigging to get that thing firing. Still beats having to make a load-bearing wooden trigger, I suppose.
