Social skills are really my Achilles Heel, and i don't really know how to work at improving what basically amounts to a negative charisma stat. But you're totally right about the grind. I suppose I ought to just pick a field and just go for it. I can get a lot of "No"s before i get a Yes, so i might as well start working through the pile.
