First off, if its for SCA, you need to learn the rules of the list for armour requirements

Secondly, unless you're working with a forge, you won't be smithing, but cold working. I will tell you now, it is an expensive hobby and you will fuck up. Since you are just learning, stick to 18 gauge mild, and try not to hurt yourself. It will be useless for anything but costume and larping, but its easy on the elbow and relatively inexpensive for when you do fuck up (and you will, a lot while you are learning.

My biggest suggestion is to get on the armour archive. It is the best thinktank of modern armourers and has a wealth of patterns, and people willing to give advice.
