I think there's a lot of truth in this. Unfortunately in a lot of western/non-Japanese communities, if your outfit doesn’t look perfectly coordinated from head to toe and 'photoshoot ready' it risks being slung into the dreaded 'ita' category. I almost think some people are so afraid of the taint of 'ita' status, that they play safe rather than experiment within the known aesthetic of lolita. /cgl/ doesn’t help itself either with its constant bitching, nitpicking and trashing of outfits from around the web. I think even for those who would never come here or have any time for it, the influence of /cgl/ etc on what is deemed 'good' is actually pretty strong and filters through.

There was lolita fucks and its various incarnations back in the day too, then there was getoffegl which was immensely popular for several years, behind the bows etc etc; all of which are geared towards the perpetual surveillance and general monitoring of other lolitas.

Oldschool lolita for me gives off an impression of not existing for anyone's approval, and I can't help but feel nostalgic for it.
