If you go to ANY con you're gonna have people like that. But a majority is still going to be fun interesting people. This is a really weird blanket statement when usually "gross unhygienic people" has been the stereotype of anime nerds for eons. Just dress up how you want and have fun, fuck whatever "stigma" you think you're going to attract.
You don't have to immerse yourself or identify with anything. Lots of furries have a bunch of characters they just find fun, they don't see it as THEM. (sure there are those who do but there's like...millions of furries so who cares about percentages at this point?) If you want to make a fursuit or get a fun partial to wear around do it
I find raves and events easier when I'm wearing a big dumb head that obscures my face
